Position Purpose:

In this role you will lead insight-driven packaging, product description and marketing copy across Petco's owned brands. As Lead Copywriter, you will craft engaging, conceptual copy that brings strategy and brand voice to life in fresh and unique ways, while adhering to brand guidelines. This candidate can, with minimal direction from their superior, interpret the brief and secondary input on projects to write, proofread and edit copy for Petco packaging and marketing collateral. They have a vast understanding and mastery of omni-channel messaging and can think in a 360 framework. The candidate must be able to effectively write and edit toward the intended target audience and their consumer mindset.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Act as the lead on projects and recommend strong packaging, product marketing and marketing campaign copy, as assigned, to increase sales

  • Conceptualize and write clear, concise and compelling copy while maintaining and evolving the tone and voice through benefit and solution-driven messaging.

  • Head proofing efforts as assigned by Brand Manager and/or Director

  • Identify and uncover hidden opportunities and think beyond the brief

  • Present and/or coordinate presentation of messaging to internal teams and clients

  • Independently complete copy assignments with only broad direction.

  • Independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within firm timeframes.

  • Complete complex copy/research assignments and keep up with consumer pet-related trends.

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively and efficiently collaborate with designers, art directors, creative director, and account service/client teams to develop strategy and creative concepts on specific brands/sub-brands/lines of business and be accountable to the business results.

  • Build and maintain respectful partnerships with all teams within the marketing and merchandising functions: Strategy, Project Management, Social, Production, Insights

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Overall Workload Allocation: 60% of time will be spent developing new and unique strategic creative concepts and for packaging and omni channels, and possibly other marketing assets both independently and with a peer group. 20% of the time will be spent tracking down and disseminating product/service copy. 20% of time will be spent managing internal client revisions and reviews while meeting deadlines

Lead Petco copy projects proactively, ensure deliverables and deadlines are met and drive projects to completion.

Complete independent research on pet care issues, pet breeds and needs, pet care items and make strategic recommendations based on findings.

Complete miscellaneous copy projects and proofread special projects as assigned.

Nature of Supervision:

Report to Sr. Creative Management, ACD of Copy, collaborate and coordinate with other copywriters, designers, project owners and other departments as necessary to maintain copy standards and process flow. There is considerable latitude to complete assignments using copying and advertising experience and knowledge. Supervise proofing process with copywriter. Act as the final approval on copy projects as assigned.

Educational Background:

A four-year college degree in Journalism, Advertising or Communications with a discipline in Advertising is required. A minimum of five years' experience in-house or advertising agency copywriting with proven record of success, including three years' experience in packaging or product marketing copywriting. Additionally, the following knowledge skillset and abilities are required:

  • Advanced writing and editing skills, including experience creating concise, compelling copy within tight schedule constraints

  • Expert understanding of MLA formatting style guidelines

  • Significant experience leading copy projects from inception to completion

  • Complete working knowledge of marketing/advertising copy strategies

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Comprehensive understanding of MAC environment, Word, Excel and Typography functions

  • Strong ability to accomplish goals through partnerships built on mutual trust, fairness, integrity and honesty.

  • Strong ability to partner and negotiate effectively with vendors and internal PETCO associates.

  • Strong ability to understand and communicate with a diverse set of leaders and associates at various levels and within various functional areas

  • Strong ability to manage multiple responsibilities with the talent to shift center of focus from one task to another with minimal challenge.

  • A strong interest in pet merchandising

  • Experience with vendor co-op driven advertising campaigns is desirable

Contacts:

Primary contact will be with the Copy Manager, Creative Design Manager, VP of Brand and Creative, Internal Clients, Merchant Teams and the E-commerce Team. There is also frequent interaction with vendors regarding copy.

If the regulatory minimum wage exceeds the minimum indicated in the pay range below, the regulatory minimum wage will be the minimum rate applied.
