POSITION TITLE: Manager, Intern & Outreach Program
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a key team member of the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS), the Manager of Intern and Outreach Programs will play a vital role in planning, implementing, and evaluating internship and outreach initiatives at Scripps Research. The Manager will work to broadly promote STEM education and awareness, strengthen relationships, and contribute to the overall success of Scripps Research's educational programs. The Manager contributes to the overall goal of increasing the number of students from historically marginalized groups pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Collaboration & Partnerships
- Collaborates with the OGS, HR, Philanthropy, Marketing & Communications, trainee groups, and others to lead K-12 STEM outreach and engagement projects with faculty, students, and strategic partners.
- Works with Philanthropy and OGS to write and submit new grant applications and renewals; researches funding opportunities; creates stewardship reports; and supports fund development by facilitating donor-student interactions.
- Identifies internal and external partners to align research and educational project outcomes, creating impactful learning experiences for students from diverse backgrounds.
- Collaborates with stakeholders to identify community needs, assess STEM program effectiveness, and gather feedback for continuous improvement.
Program & Event Management
- Plans and coordinates all aspects of summer internship programs, including the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) program.
- Manages logistics for internships, community engagement, and outreach projects, including room reservations, booking transportation, tours, supply coordination, travel arrangements, virtual meeting setups, and communications.
- Designs and implements science activities and demonstrations, ensuring safety and procuring necessary materials, equipment, and consumables.
- Assists with the planning and execution of student - and faculty - initiated outreach programs and departmental events for the Office of Graduate Studies.
Recruitment & Selection
- Recruits student and teacher applicants from universities, local high schools, and other organizations; maintains an applicant database; coordinates intern selection.
- Ensures interns are in compliance with Institute policies and state/federal laws.
- Collects feedback from interns during offboarding at the conclusion of their internship experiences.
Communication & Reporting

- Creates and distributes compelling content to communicate STEM program objectives and impact to diverse audiences, leveraging various communication channels.
- Works with Marketing & Communications to contribute stories, edit/proof content, handle media inquiries, and coordinate interviews.
- Responds to inquiries from faculty, staff, students, parents, teachers, and community partners.
- Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in program management and planning, preferably within K-12 science education, STEM education, non-profit management, or a related field, with a focus on high school or undergraduate enrichment and outreach programs.
- Proven success in managing events or programs, including design, promotion, recruitment, logistics, registration, implementation, and evaluation.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple departments.
- Demonstrated experience creating marketing and communication materials to raise awareness, educate, or persuade, with knowledge of best practices for using social media to engage communities and students.
- Familiarity with community resources and dynamics, with a passion for promoting STEM education.
- Experience working collaboratively with students, schools, and community groups.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Previous experience in education-related grant writing is preferred.
- Proficiency in Zoom, Teams, and Microsoft programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to travel, including out-of-state trips, as needed to support organizational objectives.
- This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus.
COMPENSATION:
The expected hiring range for this position is $85,000 to $102,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
